Free Essays on Looking At Women The Difference I can still remember those excruciatingly hot summer days when not being sixteen years old was just horrible, since my friends and I did not have the privilege of being that wonderful age in owning a car. To get to our desired destination, we would have to walk quite a lot, sometimes for hours. I recollect being so tired and hot from the summer sun that my friends and I would stagger into a place when we would finally get there. During those years we prayed every day for that wonderful age to arrive. I enjoyed those experiences with my friends. But there was one aspect I did not enjoy, (my friends would disagree with me) the constant honks, hollers, and inappropriate comments men of all ages made. My friends loved them and even sometimes kept count of how many we received. I found them disgusting and degrading to women. I did not understand how my friends could find it to be a compliment, when I found myself to be disgusted. Why do men react to women in such a way? Why are women pe rceived as objects? Will the boundary line ever disappear? Can men and women ever come to understand each other with respect? In the article ââ¬Å"Looking at Women,â⬠Sanders spends half his lifetime searching for an answer to his question: ââ¬Å"How should men look at women?â⬠(255). To answer his question he begins by going back in time to the age of eleven. He remembers staring at a girl who was dressed in a pair of pink shorts, wondering how she caused that weird feeling in his stomach. He saw her as someone who was trying to draw attention to herself. He then jumps to the time when he was attending college, staring at the nude pictures of women on his roommateââ¬â¢s wall. He remembers other guys gathering at that wall to discuss women as though they were parts of the ââ¬Å"meat marketâ⬠(Sanders 256). During his years in college Sanders remembers seeing girls dressed in revealing clothes and having their faces covered with makeup. He saw thei...

Communications Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Communications - Coursework Example The movement of structuralism is closely connected to the study of signs and symbols and how individuals created meanings of these signs and symbols. The movement of structuralism is said to have been originated in the theories of Ferdinand de Saussure during the early period of the 1900s (Berger, 2006, p.20). Saussure was the one who developed signs and symbols and believed that all languages constitute of difficult system of symbols and these symbols help in expressing ideas and there are certain regulations that are governing the way these symbols are used. He asserted that any particular symbol is a matter of chance and a link does not exist between a word and the meaning attached to it. For example: the word ââ¬Å"dogâ⬠does not signify an image of an animal. Structuralism even states that a literary piece of work has zero origin and the individual authoring a piece of literary work simply occupies an already existing language which assists him/her in created sentences for his/her story. 2. Culler states that society is a primary reality, by this statement he is entering into an argument against Ferdinand de Saussure who is of the idea that human beings are the ones who have created society and the society itself was not created first (Berger, 2006, p.14). Basically, Culler is entering into a chicken and egg debate in which the issue is whether chicken created eggs or the eggs created chicken. Culler is arguing that it was not the humans who created the society, and society preceded human beings. Culler states that the society is not an outcome of behaviors conducted by human beings and is not demonstration of the human mind. Culler even stated that if an individual wants to conduct a study on human behavior and wants to analyze human behavior, he/she should first study the society and he even added that meanings are derived when an individual interacts with the society and thus they should be explained in the context of the society. Culler has raise d a significant debate against the assumptions of structuralism, this is because if the society would not have existed human beings would not have learned how to interpret the meaning of a specific sign or object and this is because the meaning of science do not evolve out of nowhere, they are created by the society. The society is very important for the development of communication as due to its existence, humans learn how to speak and write and learn meanings of different signs and symbols. 3. The patterns in which stories and speeches are narrated and told are a huge field of study and one of the greatest theorists who contributed to this study was William Labov during 1972 (Berger, 2006, p.40). According to Labov there are six steps if story telling starting from abstract in which an overview of the story is provided. For example: In a recent speech on animal behavior I attended, the speaker started by proving an overview of what he is going to talk about. Next comes the orienta tion in which the speaker informed us about which animals he is going to talk about, their behaviors at under different situations and the reasons for exhibiting that behavior. Next is the complicating action in which the speaker informed us about the events in which he will narrate the entire topic starting off with a background, concentrating on theorists and application of theories and in the end he concludes. Next he provided an evaluation of the events

Summaary Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Summaary - Essay Example People belonging from different backgrounds can only maintain balance, when they realize success and achievement is due to their skills, not association with any popular race, firm or an institution. Media has played significant role in promoting stereotype thoughts into the minds of its viewers and itââ¬â¢s done in such an invisible and natural manner, that people cannot see it directly but accept it as a rational way of behaving with race, gender and color. Movies are an important part of American culture and people who design them are consciously aware of the impacts on audience. Therefore, they are promoting the manipulative ideas like black for evil and white for heroism and the constant denial of feminist theory, in a sleeker manner. Hooks believes thatà ââ¬Å"mass media was used to get women out of the factory and back into the home,â⬠(Hooks, 2002). That the stereotype didnââ¬â¢t want them out, competing them; but wanted to show them as sex devices kept at home for pleasure. White supremacist capitalist patriarchy stands for viewing life from not just one perspective like gender, race or age but form a wider horizon. Colonization makes a person aware of his link with certain race and hence enables a person how the white world or the political powers, wants him to behave and deals his business around because the policy has been set by them. Racism is not produced by white people who are all around but it is a system developed by white capalist which people are following nonetheless. Critical vigilance is required for becoming full aware of what is around and how it is supposed to be dealt with. Literacy is the main source which can make a person proactive in a racist environment and enable him to act unbiased towards others. ââ¬Å"Freedom and justice are connected to mass based literacyâ⬠(Hooks, 2002). A person can only achieve freedom and justice when he is aware of his rights

Crime Scene Documentation Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Crime Scene Documentation - Assignment Example In these cases, the accused is always acquitted as charges levelled against him/her cannot stand due to the malicious acts of the officers of destroying evidence that the court was to rely on. In the case State v. Blair 2013 Ohio 1270, the second district appellate court dismissed an indictment as a result of a law enforcement officer destroying a materially exculpatory video, which the defence was set to rely on in the case. The felony that was committed in this particular case was an assault, which was made on a law enforcement officer (Acker & Brody, 2013). There is a legal standard that is in place that bars the state from convicting the defendant in the following circumstances; if the state and in this case the prosecution together with case investigators fail to preserve ââ¬Å"materially exculpatory evidenceâ⬠or if the state acts in bad faith to destroy evidence that is potentially useful (Acker & Brody, 2013). In any scenario if the evidence involved is classified as materially exculpatory it is not the defendants duty proving that the state acted in bad faith to the court destroying the evidence however, the defendant only needs to prove to the court, it was the sole duty of the state to preserve that particular evidence despite destruction occurring either due to negligence or in bad faith (Gorelick & Solum, 2009). In so doing, the defendant has a duty to convince the court on the importance of the evidence to that particular case (Acker & Brody, 2013). This case involved a situation whereby a police officer tried to arrest a young man. The man in this case Blair tried to resist arrest as the officer had not fully explained to him the felony he had committed. The police officer decided to manhandle Blair by kicking him and choking him in order to arrest him successfully. Thus, in the process, there was a by-passer who was watching the whole incident and recorded it on his cell phone but noticing, the police

Military appts Essay Example for Free
Military appts Essay Doctors appointments are missed each and every day by people who either forget to show up or choose not to call and cancel their appointment. One of the reasons why it is best to try and keep your doctors appointment is because it is the polite thing to do. Would you arrange a job interview with a company you were serious about working for but then fail to show up? No, not in the civilian world. It is very important to schedule routine doctor appointments regularly to ensure proper treatment as needed to care for my health as an injured soldier. I schedule my appointments so I can work on treating my injuries physically and mentally so when I medically retire I can hope for a better future of recovering and living a healthy life with a greater chance of being alive a lot longer than if I didnt take proper treatment. If I didnt think appointment were important than I would see my health go downhill and the recovery would be nearly impossible. Its very important to be on time to my appointments because if I were late I wouldnt receive the proper treatment I need, I would be taking time away from another soldier that thinks his appointments are just as important for his treatment and it wouldnt be fair to anyone, including myself and my healthy life and another reason is because it is my place of duty while in the military. When scheduling appointments you do not want to miss them for a number of reasons. If you miss the appointment, you are not only wasting your doctors time. You could also place your health at risk if you do not start your treatment as quickly as possible. It is rude to your doctor and you are not following through with treatment thats important for your health. Someone who also needed treatment sooner could have had the opportunity to be seen if I was going to schedule and miss my appointment. One of the primary concerns with missed appointments is that they limit access to care for multiple patients. When patients fail to appear for their appointments or they dont call and cancel in advance, its kind of hard to have enough appointments to meet the health-care needs of other patients. Making an appointment is the same as guaranteeing you will be somewhere at the agreed upon time. Just as you expect a provider to be there as scheduled, the provider expects you to be there as well. The dental office supports hundreds of members a day and works hard to keep the process of seeing Soldiers flowing smoothly. Missing an appointment interrupts that process and creates unnecessary additional work for schedulers, providers, and staff. Our goal is to support the organization that supports us by meeting all appointments. Although I can understand your missing an appointment because of recent distractions, there is no valid excuse for missing an appointment. We must find a way to make sure you dont miss future appointments. People use a variety of methods but they all share one thing in common: they all realize, at the moment they make the appointment, that they have made a promise to be present at a certain time and place and must find a way to make sure they meet their obligation. Some people have established methods that they use over and over such as writing the appointment down in an appointment book and reviewing it daily. Others write it down on a sticky note and put it somewhere where they will see it every day to remind them of the impending appointment. I will not dictate the method you use because our goal is to make sure you meet all future appointments and the method I suggest may not work for you. You must choose a method that works for you and ensure you make all future appointmets because further missed appointments will result in more severe action and affect your career.

Sylvia Plaths The Bell Jar - Feminist Thought :: Feminism Feminist Women Criticism
The Bell Jarà - Feminist Thought The Bell Jarà à This autobiographical novel by Sylvia Plath follows the story of Esther Greenwood, a third year college student who spends her summer at a lady's fashion magazine in Manhattan. But despite her high expectations, Esther becomes bored with her work and uncertain about her own future. She even grows estranged from her traditional-minded boyfriend, Buddy Willard, a medical student later diagnosed with TB. Upon returning to her hometown New England suburb, Esther discovers that she was not selected to take a Harvard summer school fiction course, and subsequently starts to slip into depression. Esther finds herself unable to concentrate and perform daily tasks. Therefore she decides to undergo a few sessions with Dr. Gordon, a psychiatrist, and even undergoes treatments of electroshock therapy. As the depression sinks in, Esther becomes obsessive about suicide, and tries to kill herself by crawling into the cellar where she subsequently ingested a bottle of sleeping pills. Esther's attempt fails and she is taken to a city hospital, and then over to a private psychiatric institution by the intervention of a benefactor. As Esther begins to recover, she develops a close relationship with her psychiatrist Dr. Nolan, and eventually leaves the hospital as a transformed woman. This transformation, spiritual reassessment or moral reconciliation is exactly the kind of happy ending described by Fay Weldon. In The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath ends the book with the scene of Esther going into meet the doctors of the mental evaluation board. She is standing outside the room with Dr. Nolan, observing the people around her and making observations about herself: 'Don't be scared,' Doctor Nolan had said. But inspite of Doctor Nolan's reassurances, I was scared to death. There ought, I thought, to be a ritual for being born twice patched, retreaded and approved for the road, I was trying to think of an appropriate one when Doctor Nolan appeared out of nowhere and touched me on the shoulder. All right, Esther. I rose and followed her to the door..and guided myself by them (the doctors), as by a magical thread, I stepped into the room. (pg.199) This particular assessment is significant to the rest of the work because Esther goes through a drastic change in order to get where she is now. At the start of the novel, Esther is seen as very intelligent, yet she faces the woman's dilemma of choosing between career and family to the ambivalence of remaining a virgin.

Dimensions of Diversity
There is much lip service given these days to the concept of diversity in the workforce. The reason that it is ââ¬Å"lip serviceâ⬠is that many people only have a vague understanding of what a diverse workforce actually is and why diversity is highly important within the business world. There are a number of reasons why a diverse workforce is an effective workforce. On a baseline level, a workforce that incorporates various dimensions of diversity will never be a stagnant work force. That is, when the people who make up the work force come from a multitude of backgrounds, there will be a variety of different perspectives offered on various business decisions. For example, if there is a question regarding how to market a specific product to a specific group of people, would it not be wise to have individuals from that specific group of people part of the decision making process regarding the actual marketing plan? It is surprising that there will be a number of companies that wil l actually exclude the targeted group from the planning stages. This is terrible management and will only lead to a number of missteps and oversights that could have easily been corrected had a more diverse workforce been employed. Also, incorporating dimensions of diversity in the workforce is the moral thing to do. To have a workforce that is exclusionary is no different than a cancerous growth at the epicenter of the company. Lack of diversity will eat away at a company until it can not function and, in the modern era, a workforce that is not diverse does not belong in the modern era at all.
